Reviews of These Past Weeks - The debut CD from Words Away
|
From: Euphonia OnLine So Robby gave me this CD and is rushing
me to write a review. And that’s not cool, because I don’t get to spend
that much quality time with the album. Plus I want a raise on the
zero-dollar paycheck. I wrote a not-so-good review for Kill Verona’s
Trauma
after having it for one night, and after a month I found it to be one of
my favorite EPs of all time, constantly putting it into my CD player. |
WORDS AWAY these past weeks CD
I’m reliably informed by the blurb that comes with the CD that this sounds like
HOT WATER MUSIC, whoopey doo. What it is with the plethora of HWM wannabes?
Let’s be frank here HWM are just a piss poor version of Mush era LEATHERFACE.
Look kids please just buy said LP and get over it. OK sorry about the diversion
let’s get back to WORDS AWAY who, incidentally, do not really sound too much
like HWM or LEATHERFACE. This three piece from New Jersey belt out 11 tracks of
driving melodic hardcore in a similar vein to bands like LIFETIME and maybe even
FACE TO FACE to a lesser extent. I admire Boss Tuneage records for putting out
the sheer volume of new music that they do, however I admit that I have
questioned the quality control element of said label before, but Aston’s on to a
winner with this one. Nice one. (SH)

WORDS AWAY - “ These Past weeks ” CD *****
This reminds me of Hot water Music, Jugheads Revenge... you know the stuff... I
hardly need to describe it here. Pretty level with the quality of those bands
too. Lots of chuggy chuggy bits. Nice and simple. No lonely hearts crap. - BOZ

NORTH JERSEY NOTES BY: Tim Louie
They're huge in Europe and an independent record
label, Boss Tuneage Records released their CD, These
Past Weeks. Here in the states, they're just another local
alternative punk rock band. They call themselves Words
Away. Not only are are they "just" a local band, but they're
also starting to make some noise around this music
scene, you might recognize the drummer as Dylan from
one of my local favorites Joanie Loves Trotsky. I liked
Words Away a lot too. They label themselves as a punk
band, but the tracks that I heard , "Move On", "Digging
Holes", and "This Life Is Not", have a little more alterna-
tive rock sound.
Words Away are a three-piece melodic punk/rock band
from Garfield NJ. They've been together since June
2002 and have been delivering college sounding all rock
ever since. Words Away are made up of Mike the gui-
tarist/lead singer, George the bassist, and Dylan (also
from Joanie Loves Trotsky) the drummer. The trio claims
that they're a Canadian band, which seems to be a pret-
ty cool gimmick, but they are all from Jersey.
Since 2002, Words Away have been playing in and
around the metro area and even signed an independent
deal with Boss Tuneage Records, who at first released a
bunch of singles from Words Away abd then eventually
their full-length CD These Past Weeks. The CD sold well
in Europe and even got the band praises from many
Europeon publications.
I did get a chance to hear three songs from Words Away
on their website www.wordsaway.net and I enjoyed all of
them. My favorite though was "This Life Is Not" because
of the cool bass intro and the very catchy guitar riff that
just kicks in. Some very cool effects on the vocals too on
this song.

These Past Weeks
Boss Tuneage/Does Everyone Stare?
Boss Tuneage is known for releasing a steady stream of solid, Doughboys-inspired
pop punk, but this LP by Canada's Words Away is really something else. While I
tend to think that most of the stuff on Boss T (at least the label's
bread-and-butter pop releases) gets to be a little bit too stylized for my
tastes, Words Away's music is strictly from the gut. This band plays like
they're the headlining band at the concert at the end of the universe.
Take "Move On," for instance. At two minutes ten seconds it's the album's
shortest song (always a plus with me), and while the tempo isn't as fast as
Words Away can get from time to time the song just seeths with emotion. The
chorus, in particular, locks into a powerful groove that, when overlaid with
some shimmering little guitar flourishes, is pure pop punk ecstasy. Forget that
emo stuff, this is punk rock, but just like bands such as Leatherface and
Jawbreaker, it's pop punk that'll hit you right in the gut. Recommended
listening for sure!

Hears
hears!!! Now is Christmas or which?!? I rise this morning, think I pull myself
now times a few disks to the Reviewen clean and am baff!!! First the k-LINE
disk, me genuinely umgehauen has and now still unknown volume, which makes
correctly good noise. "WORDS AWAY" from new jersey (you know already bon jovi
and in such a way) land with their Debut surely with some in the middle in
heart. Carried ones, well produced Midtempoemocore get one on "thesis past
Weeks". Sometimes the rough voice of Mike Carroll reminds of from the Hot the
Water Music front man. Unfortunately and that is the point of minus waits one
in vain for a knackigen high point or a trip into the harder Gefilde. There is
some harder Songs drauf, but also those somehow work very very harmlessly, no
notion, perhaps are it at production or because of the missing Mesa Boogie
sound. Is altogether already unfortunate, but hey... fat Debut!!! Will surely
develop further and will very thickly wave off.Nicola

Boss Tuneage´s releasing three really strong albums this month-
and the one by Words Away is one of it. This three piece delivers a rocking mid
tempo album, with lots of hymnic
moments while they remain on a rough edge. Punkrock with an melancholic touch,
which gets them close to (new) Hot Water Music
or a more melodic version of early Small Brown Bike. A real surprise!

PAST WEEKS(CD
BOSS
TUNEAGEBOSTAGE 5114) Words Away have surely listened a whole lot to Husker
Du through the times and that have done them good. It have made them good be so
sure about that because their messy pop music have many point when they touch
that type of bands. I could count up bands like Dinosaur Jr, lemonheads and so
on but Words Away manage to stand on their own legs really good. It feels a
little like Words Away have taken the best from pop and punk and on this way got
foreword a record which sounds really good. (SEVEN) 31/10-03

- Boss Samplerage 4 2xCD [Boss Tuneage]
Finally, a double CD compilation of the most productive independent label to my
knowledge. It features 56 songs by 56 bands including vinyl-only and unreleased
stuff as well. It’s a cheapo sampler and therefore an good introduction to
Bosstuneage and their really diverse work that ranges from emopop to punk to ska
to hardcore. The bands I liked the most were: The Miles Apart, Beezewax,
Doughboys, Something with Numbers, Blocko, The Milwaukees, Words Away, Shortcut
to Newark, Southpaw, Mico, Four Square, Despistado, Sylvie and Anal Beard (but
just because of their innovative name). (th)

Away - These Past Weeks CD
[Boss Tuneage]
Words Away is a 3 piece melodic Punk/Rock band from New Jersey. The band has
only been around since June Of 2002. They have a singles collection available on
Boss Tuneage records and now their debut full length as well. “These Past Weeks”
is a rocking mid tempo album, with lots of hymnic moments with an rough edge. At
times it sounds exactly like Hot Water Music. But friends of Samiam, Big Drill
Car and Small Brown Bike should risk an ear here too. (th)
One of the
last prod of boss tuneage (the label of the milwaukees, unknown and southpaw,
between others.), behind a small pocket not very engaging ("it is libreeeeee
max!") a trio delivering us hides a punk rock'n'roll not too fast, at the same
time quite melody and pop, a rugeux melancholic person, and hair... I was well
astonished by this group which will make swinguer your days until exhaustion...
As much to say that that is worth the turning, one feels that they listened to
samiam, hot toilets music and hüsker dü, this Cd is thus strongly recommended
(they are distributed in France, as well as the other artists of boss tuneage,
by walked in line)

rukou by jí nemelo odzívnout. Ale jak jsem rekl na zacátku - o nic výjimecného
nejde... jen o poctive udelanou desku, která zní jako mnoho dalších. To znamená:
nikterak originálne!
