PROBOT - S/T
Wow! Most of my favorite oldschool singers from the 80s metal underground
on one CD. Who could ask for anything more?
This is a great concept. Dave Grohl form the
Foo-Fighters/Nirvana got his favorite old-time metal singers together, wrote
some
songs for them to sing over and put it all on a CD. Man, I can imagine
that he had so much fun doing this, it must have been
one of the cooler moment sin Grohl's musical experiences. The songs are
all tailored to the individual vocalists. The Cronos song sounds a
bit like Venom and the Max Cavalera song a bit like
Sepultura/Soulfly. Some the the vocalists actually co-wrote the music.
That gives Probot a true feeling of collaboration, as opposed to
some lame thing where a song was written and a vocalist leant
some half assed effort to it. Probot sounds good. Grohl plays most of the
instruments, but let's be real here; he kicks ass and is
well up to the challenge. Here's the run down:
1. Centuries Of Sin: Cronos - from venom
2. Red War - Max Cavalera - from Sepultura/Soulfly
3. Shake Your Blood - Lemmy from Motorhead
4. Access Babylon -Mike Dean from COC
5. Silent Spring - Kurt Brecht from DRI
6. Ice Cold Man - Lee Dorrian from Cathedral/Napalm Death
7. The Emerald Law - Wino from the Obsessed
8. Big Sky - Tom G. War from Celtic Frost
9. Dictatosaurus - Snake from Voi-Vod
10. My Tortured Soul - Eric Wagner from Trouble
11. Sweet Dreams - King Diamond from Mercyful Fate
Some of these bands you've probably never even heard of/heard! So check
this out and if you life the vocals
seek out the band's music. Some of these vocalist fronted some of my all
time favorites. I would recommend this
for fans of 80s thrash metal and those who are curious about that era. It
was fun to listen to this CD. Kim Thayil from
Soundgarden also makes a couple of appearances on here as well.

Damageplan -New Found Power
Pantera's next release, absent Phil Anselmo. Does it make a
difference? No not at all. Whatever the name, Pantera sounds as heavy as
ever.
Crushing guitars, a frantic pace and some southern fried weirdness make this a
killer CD. Pantera/Damageplan are the kings
of metal, without dispute. Damageplan let loose with an all out aural
assault here, more in the vein of Far Beyond Driven than of the
Reinventing The Steel. New Found Power is a CD metal fans
should not be without. Damageplan sound heavy as hell; pure power.
I'm glad Pantera decided to keep going without Anselmo. Just to ease your
fears, this is not one of those Rob Halford vs. Ripper Owens
things, it
is more like Paul Dianno vs. Bruce Dickinson: both great
singers.
