VOI-VOD- 3 song advance for forth coming album: Voi-Vod
Some go you may not even be familiar with Voi-Vod. Well let
me take you back, way back
to 1986. We used to listen to bands like Metallica,
Celtic Frost, Slayer, Anthrax, Overkill,
Megadeth, Metal Church, and Exodus.
We also listened to Voi-Vod. Voi-Vod was a thrash
band for sure, but they were way out on the fringes, almost to the point of
being "noise metal."
Where the other aforementioned bands were into precision riffing and talented
vocals,
Voi-Vod was into roaring vocals and riffs so complicated and dissonant, that
they verged on the
insane! ha ha ha Voi-Vod were so far ahead of their time, that they
sort of got lost in the the mix.
Voi-Vod made a string of great albums; notably Killing Technology
and Dimension Hatross. After
that, they became a bit uneven, with members coming and going and some albums
that worked such
as the excellent The Outer Limits and some that did not.
Since the early 90s, Voi-Vod have hovered
at the edge of true obscurity.
I was both surprised and then I guess not so surprised, when I heard that
Jason Newstead,
the former bass player of Metallica was playing with Voi-Vod. Surprised
because Metallica is the most
popular heavy metal band on the planet and Voi-Vod is among the least known.
Unsurprised, because
these guys came out of the same scene in the 1980s, that produced so much
excellent music.
OK enough background and down to the music.
This promo for the self titled Voi-Vod (due in stores 3-4-03) shows good things
for Voi-Vod on the horizon.
The songs are in the vein of Dimension Hatross. A stripped down metal/rock feel,
with a dissonant edge thrown.
The vocals are very catchy too. The guitar sound is crunchy as all hell,
with guitarist Piggy kicking out his usual
unearthly riffs. The production is gritty and loud, just the way Voi-Vod
is best appreciated. With original
vocalist Snake back in the band, that strange Voi-Vod vibe that I
always like so much has resurfaced.
Well you know, I think Voi-Vod will be appreciated much more this time around.
Metal has changed
a lot in the last few years. Many of the newer bands are dissonant and edgy...
just like Voi-Vod.
I look forward to seeing them play live as well.
To you younger, new school fans; keep your MIND open. You will like this
band's music and you'll want to
pick up Demission Hatross and Killing Technology and maybe some other Voi-Vod as
well. For you old
schoolers; don't give up on Voi-Vod just yet, cause it seems like they're coming
back strong.
